Savage Classy Bougee Ratchet

You know how sometimes you are asked a question, and your head is filled with lyrics to a song you hardly listen to, but by some cosmic conspiracy, it answers that question right there. Yes, I just had such a moment.

On the 8th day of Christmas, I had no clue what I was going to be doing for that day not to bore my lover out of her skull; boredom has become a norm for me. Sometimes I treat it like Bane treats darkness. I wasn’t actively thinking about a solution, but I got a message from my personal angel (read brother) that would I be interested in going to Whispering Palms for a 3-night Christmas package. And no, that wasn’t the question. But to this question, it was a resounding yes. I replied yes twice just in case he didn’t see the first. Somehow, I must manage not to make it boring for my lover. So yes, it’s a date!

The appeal of Whispering Palms was sentimental if I’d be totally honest. There wasn’t enough information to glean online suggesting it as a great destination, and their Instagram was not encouraging. But almost 3 decades ago, my mum went to Whispering Palms on a working visit and the pictures were really great. So I told my lover, got her excited, we did a little shopping for the getaway. I mean, I scored some points leading the table for husband of the year.

The drive to the location from central Lagos could suck the living daylight out of you. Got to Badagry tired and fagged out, but seeing my little mushkins made me glad! Oh, Whispering Palms don’t serve lunch as complementary, and their food price was rather steep. So I drove to town with the LOML to find food and it took over an hour to finally see somewhere we could buy some groceries that later turned out to be fake.

So, to the question I was referring to; how would you describe Whispering Palms? I’d drop a Megan Thee Stallion on them. Savage, Classy (or was classy), Bougee (has the potentials to be), and Ratchet (yes, Ratchet)

For positives, this place has a great reputation. Some 3 decades ago, this was one of the few resorts around the country and has hosted many of the crème-de-la crème of the Nigerian society (now kinda crème-de-la-creepy). The waterfront view is lovely mostly, for someone who loves waters. It was far from the main town, the air is cleaner and really a lot of greens. I particularly enjoyed prayer walks at dawn along the large body of water.

For negatives, at the risk of sounding pedantic, I don’t know whether to list it alphabetically or chronologically. All I’d say is that the resort could really use a new management by the order of the Peaky Blinders. Oh yes, they lost me at the food, less crest than trouphs; a few times the food was great, a lot of times the food was bad and at all times the food delivery was atrocious. And the rooms? Left a lot to be desired.

In the end, the main drive for me was to make my lover enjoy it. Which she did, with some pictures here and there. That in itself is all the satisfaction I need.

We visited the Slave Trade Museum in Badagry, the first story building, the first well and some other historically relevant places which I’d cover in my other blog.

To the next pertinent question, would I be willing to go there again? ABSOLUTELY! I always love a getaway. But if I’m going next I’d be better prepared. Would probably load the car with some food stuff and a lot of clothing changes.

One thing remains strongly inside me, my love for large bodies of water; it would never wane.
